he production of nitrogen-based fertilizer requires
the operation of a set of ‘chemical’ plants, first
making the precursor chemicals and then
combining these to manufacture the final fertilizer
product. Each of these stages of production has different
conditions (chemistry, temperature, pressure) that result in
requirements for different materials of construction – from
carbon steel and stainless steel to titanium and zirconium. This
